Ed and Hank, 5th update (an interlude)

This 'n that...

Note: Very short, for a change (and Iris has gone home).  Disclaimer: Hank told their story to Annie Proulx. Jack and Ennis are all hers. Ed and Hank belong only to each other. OFI: No $$: isn't everything. Comments: Always appreciated.

Everything else is here:

This 'n that...

“Wha’s wrong, Ed?”

“Found tha’ book a yers… Lyin’ on the coffee table.”

“Wha’ book?”

“Ya know damn well wha’ book. The one ‘m holdin’ in my hand. The one with them pictures.”

“Oh… Tha' one.”

“Think ya left it there fer me ta find.”

“Maybe… Did ya look at it?”

“C’mon, Ed… Did ya look at it or not?”

“’Course I looked at it. How the hell would I know ‘bout them pictures if’n I didn’ look at it?”

“I ain’t doin’ some a tha’ stuff.”

“Won’ make ya do nothin’ ya don’ wanna do.”

“Ain’t never ‘nough fer ya… is it?”

“Whatever we do is ‘nough fer me. Jus’ thought ya migh’ wanna do somethin’ a l’il diff’rent.”

“Not tha' diff'rent.”

“Won’ make ya do nothin’ ya ain’t comfortable with.”

“Too old ta be doin’ some a tha’ stuff.”

“Ya ain’t too old, Ed.”

“Sure am. Don’ bend tha’ way.”

“Seen ya bend plenty a ways.”

"Not them ways. 'N I ain't no acrobat neither."

"Don' 'xpect ya ta be no acrobat."

“Well, I ain't. ’N jus’ so’s ya don' get confused 'bout nothin'… I went through tha’ book ‘n marked the ones I definitely won’ be doin’.”

“How’d ya mark ‘em?”

“Put an ‘x’ in the corner a each one. So’s we don’ even gotta talk ‘bout it.”

“Tha’ way you’ll jus’ know wha’ I won’ do. From the beginnin’… withou’ havin’ ta ask or nothin’.”

“Okay… okay… I get it. Lemme see which ones ya marked…”

“Ain’t doin’ any a tha'.”

“I know. Ya said tha’ already. ‘N I told ya… I ain’t gonna make ya do nothin’ ya don’ wanna do.”

“Jus’ makin’ sure.”

"Ain't never made ya do nothin' ya didn' wanna do. Or at least nothin' ya didn' end up likin' when it were all over... did I?"

"Guess not..."

“So... lemme see ‘em already…”

Here are

a few

 photos of

what Ed

ain't gonna

be doin'

"I ain't doin' tha'."

"'N I ain't doin' tha' neither."

"Or tha'."

"'N I ain't wearin' shorts. Or striped socks.
No self-respectin' cowboy wears shorts or striped socks."

"Think tha' guy who wrote this book migh' be nuts."
"Think the word's 'eccentric', Ed."

“'N I don’ care about tha’ bet ya won…

I'm doin' most a the drivin' on them back roads
so's we don' end up like tha'.”

"'N maybe ya better work on fixin' some a them epitaphs... just in case we don' make it back... "

"We're gonna make it back, Ed. Ain't goin' nowheres dangerous."

"Well... I ain't doin' nothin' like them pictures showed."

"I know tha' Ed. Ya jus' showed me whatcha won' do. So... is there anythin' ya will do?"

“Sure. Whole buncha stuff. Nothin' fancy. 'N usually don' involve no ropes or harnesses.”

“Oh yeah? Ya mark them pictures?”

“Nope. Ain't no pictures in tha' book a wha' I'll do. I'll jus' have ta show ya. C'mere, Hank.”

“Tha's real nice... Like it a lot... But... is tha' all?

“Nope. I’ll do this too… ‘n this…”

“Careful... tha' zipper sticks some, Cowboy...”

“‘N this.”

“Easier if’n ya take my boots off first… Think ya’d know tha’ by now…”

“’N this. 'N this. 'N this.”

“Hey… watch where yer throwin’ tha’ t-shirt… it were clean.”

"'N this. 'N this. 'N this. 'N this."

"Sure... when it's yer own clothes 'n boots ya put 'em aside nice 'n neat-like."

“'N this............. 'N this............ 'N this............ 'N this............”

“’N mphiff.”

"Ain't no one ever told ya tha' it ain’t polite... Damn... ta talk… Jeez
with yer mouth full… Ed…"

Pictures are from 'Canyon Hiking Guide to the Colorado Plateau' by Michael R. Kelsey. This is not intended as an endorsement, or non-endorsement, of Mr. Kelsey's book(s). But Hank would be remiss if he didn't give some warning: These books can lead ya ta do some stuff tha' maybe ya shouldn' be doin'. 'N if'n it does ya gotta be smart 'nough ta turn 'round 'fore ya get inta the kinda trouble ya cain't get outta.

The four most important things ta remember: Don' never go down nothin' ya cain't get back up 'lessen yer damn sure ya can get out another way; Always look back now 'n again when yer goin' so's tha' ya know wha' way ta go when yer tryin' ta get the hell outta wherever ya migh' be, 'n hopefully ya know where that is; Don' go inta narrow canyons if'n it's s'posed ta rain anywheres west a the Mississippi; And make sure someone back home knows where yer goin' so's they got a gen'ral idea a where ta start lookin' fer yer body when ya don' turn up fer Sunday dinner.

I have a wicked, dirty mind.

But it sure was fun imaginin' just what it was that Ed would and wouldn't do.

One question: If there was a pie in that jeep, would Ed go get it?

'Blue, the disclaimer has been committed to memory.

Love ya, Dumbass.

Re: I have a wicked, dirty mind.

Hey J/L/D,
Glad you had a good time exercising your imagination.

Answer: I believe it would take more than pie for Ed to make that kind of climb.

And there'll be quiz in the morning on the disclaimer so you'd better have it memorized.

Backatcha, Dumbass.

Re: I have a wicked, dirty mind.

Okay, 'Blue, you gone an' done it now, and no lie.

So here I am, mindin' my own business (ain't nobody's business but ours, anyway!), readin' along in the April Week at Don Wroe's Cabin challenge, havin' a fantastic time enjoyin' Ohiomyown's submission (and I ain't talking the kind that Wannabebrit is writin' so well!) when along comes this line, and I quote (Don't worry, no spoiler):

"The next morning was glorious, as days after a hard rain usually are. The air was clean and crisp, a bit dry and even nippy. They packed some water, apples, and the rest of the sandwiches, and headed out on foot to explore."

An' dang you, 'fore I could even read to the nex' sentence, up comes this to my mind:

"The four most important things ta remember...."

'Blue, you got me good.

Love ya anyway.

Re: I have a wicked, dirty mind.

At least they were taking water with them. And food. And that's some real purty writin' too. Can practically feel that clean, crisp air. I love the day after a good downpour.

Yer lucky Hank stopped at four. Water 'n food are real important too. But Hank didn't list 'em 'cause he figures if'n folks don' know 'nough ta take water 'n food withou' bein' told then there's no way they're gonna make it no how.

P.S. Just start humming that 'Green Acres' theme song and that should knock those four things right outta yer head.

:begs forgiveness:

Re: I have a wicked, dirty mind.

Just finished putting a bucket on. And it's already in my eyes. UGH.

Now, I've just got to get Ed and Hank slathered up.

Hmmmm... This list of 'most important things' is getting awfully long. Maybe everybody should just stay home and dance instead. And that slathering is kinda fun...

Hank's the tease... not me. Although I do admit to being a card-carrying member of the wicked mind club. :D

I'm with Ed

Don't need no ropes and harnesses. 'N I ain't no acrobat, neither. But there's plenty a other stuff I'll do, and I have a whole lotta fun doin those things: lookin at interestin' rocks, explorin caves, campin out, and enjoyin pie. An' ice cream cones--I'm real artistic at lickin up the ice cream, catchin the drips, makin it last a long time.:-)

Hank likes to tease, but I bet Ed surprises him with what he will try, an what he turns out to like doin just fine.

Re: I'm with Ed

You and Ed do seem to have a LOT in common. (Well... the interestin' rocks are really Hank's hobby...) :D And you're right, Ed never ceases to surprise Hank. And Hank likes it that way just fine.

Re: I'm with Ed

Just wanted to let you know that I mistook you for Lalaynia in responding to your comment on the 6th update. :D

If I hadn't been in a hurry, my poor old brain would have figured out that it was you. But what I said still applies... You DO have a beautiful way with words: "Cause they're alive in my heart, an yours, an we all know that love is what gives all of us life and shows us our real selves."

And I have really looked forward to your comments - Thanks so much!

And this too. Be careful about offering pie... with that kind of enticement who knows who could show up at your door.

P.S. Hank loves the idea of Ed writing, but doubts he could ever get him to do it. :)

Hmm the things we do for the ones we love

Yes I believe Ed and Hank are in for one great trip or maybe they already started the trip to celebrating their trip or maybe they just needed a new excuse to celebrate and well that is the case sometimes we just look for ways to well do the things we like and even though a few harnesses are in the picture at least they are in the tack room I hope or well maybe it would be interesting to have in the bedroom but oh why do that when you have a great big old barn to use the harness in or is that strap. Hmm rambling and thinking of all those butt shots we saw. Joe

Re: Hmm the things we do for the ones we love

LOL! Hey Joe, Always love your rambings! And yep... any excuse to celebrate is a good excuse to celebrate. Heck... who even needs an excuse. Maybe that's the best time to celebrate when there's absolutely no reason to.
